The number of Spotify's ad based MAUs at the end of 2021 was 236 million compared to 199 million at the end of 2020. While the number of Spotify's premium subscribers increased by 16% in 2021 compared to the prior year, the ad based MAUs increased by 19%.
Spotify also experienced significant improvement in its revenue and gross profit in 2021 compared to 2020. Its revenue for 2021 reached € 9.7 billion compared to € 7.9 billion in 2020. The company generated €8,460 million in 2021 from premium subscribers compared to €7,135 million in 2020. Its revenue from ad based users was €1,208 million in 2021 compared to €745 million in 2020.
