The following table shows the number of Spotify's free and premium subscribers. The numbers are in millions. Spotify offers mainly two types of services. The free ones are ad based and the premium subscriptions are available for a monthly fee.

Spotify is the largest music streaming network globally with a large Monthly active user base of 406 million MAUs. The company offers its services across 184 countries and territories. It has expanded into several new markets in 2021. During 2020, it offered its services across only 93 markets.

The number of total monthly active users of Spotify increased by 18% in 2021 compared to 2020. Spotify's MAUs at the end of 2021 reached 406 million compared to 345 million in 2020. The number of Spotify premium subscribers at the end of 2021 was 180 million compared to 155 million at the end of the prior year. 

The number of Spotify's ad based MAUs at the end of 2021 was 236 million compared to 199 million at the end of 2020. While the number of Spotify's premium subscribers increased by 16% in 2021 compared to the prior year, the ad based MAUs increased by 19%.

Spotify also experienced significant improvement in its revenue and gross profit in 2021 compared to 2020. Its revenue for 2021 reached  € 9.7 billion compared to  € 7.9 billion in 2020. The company generated  €8,460 million in 2021 from premium subscribers compared to  €7,135 million in 2020. Its revenue from ad based users was €1,208 million in 2021 compared to  €745 million in 2020.

The premium ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) of Spotify in 2021 was €4.29 compared to  €4.31 in 2020.
